It's up to you how you want to spend your holiday, whether that's lazing on the beach at a Caribbean club hotel sipping Mai Tais. Or tending to the garden.

While I do enjoy the occasional Mai Tai on the beach, I prefer to see new things and travel to faraway places. I've read my fair share of travel guides to find out where to go and what to see. And I was often disappointed.

While many guidebooks spend an entire chapter extolling the virtues of a particular destination (e.g. a capital city), World Heritage Sites are different. They're as objective as it gets, and often take you off the beaten track. For example, I have fond memories of my taxi ride through a Czech winter landscape to visit Holasovice, a site that only World Heritage connoisseurs would appreciate. More often than not, WHS are great places.

Initially, I concentrated on visiting as many WHS as possible, which gave me a good overview. However, since I've reached the magic 300 (almost 600 now), I've shifted my focus to visiting the really great sites: quality over quantity.

Ultimately, I recommend that you travel as you please. However, if you find yourself in a country (even if it's just for a beach holiday), take a look at the map of World Heritage Sites on this site to see if any are nearby. You may have to travel a little off the beaten track, but I assure you it will be worth it.

Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats

Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats

As a Wadden Sea fan and a native of Schleswig-Holstein, I do have a soft spot for tidal mud flats. It was on my first visit to Korea more than 20 years ago, sitting on the airport train from Incheon to Seoul, that I spotted what looked like Korea’s own “Wadden” Sea along the way: the tidal flats.

On that trip, we never made it to the coast, so I didn’t get to explore the mudflats

Meknes

Meknes

Meknes was the last of the four royal cities of Morocco we visited. Unfortunately, we had really bad luck on multiple levels. It turns out it does rain in Morocco in March - plenty. The rain in Meknes was so persistent that it significantly limited our ability to explore the city. We missed several key parts simply because our clothes were too wet to continue wandering around.

To make matters worse, several major sites were closed for renovation—and have been for quite some time. Neither the granaries/stables nor the Kara prison were open during our visit (March 2025).

Abbey and Altenmünster of Lorsch

Abbey and Altenmünster of Lorsch

Visiting Lorsch today, you might find it to be a rather quiet and uneventful town. However, it's fascinating to imagine that during Carolingian and medieval times, Lorsch was a bustling monastery. One of the unique aspects of Lorsch was that it was among the first abbeys North of the Alps to possess a relic. Before this, strict rules mandated that all relics be kept in Rome. Frankish Count Cancor and his cousin, Abbot Chrodegang, managed to relax these rules, allowing Lorsch to house a relic.

I think the "gifting" of the relic has to be seen in light of the ascendency of the Franks. The Catholic Church's became increasingly reliant on Charlemagne and the Franks for protection

Berlin Modernism Housing Estates

In 2012, while visiting Berlin for a job interview, I took the opportunity to visit three locations of the Modernism Housing Estates before my interview. The interview was at lunchtime, so I had ample time in the morning. I began my visit at Schillerstraße, then walked to Weiße Stadt before taking a bus and train to Wohnsiedlung Carl Legien.

My impression of these sites at the time aligns well with Ian's summary: In the suburbs of post World War 2 Germany, they look pretty common place, a testament to the significant influence of the architects (most notably Taut and Scharoun) and ideas [...]

Seowon, Neo-Confucian Academies

If you play Civilization VI, you know what a Seowon is: the Korean variant of the blue Campus District. A Seowon generates a lot of science, is cheap to build, and can give Korea a head-start in the science race.

In the real world, Seowons were Neo-Confucian academies established during the Joseon period. They served two central purposes: as shrines for ancestor worship and as academies for young nobles preparing for the civil servant examination.

The nine Seowons that form the WHS are scattered across Korea. We visited two: Oksan (part of the Yangdong Folk Village WHS) and Pilam. Of the two, Pilam was the better site. It's larger and better preserved
